Operation Face Lift
Budget September 2000 - January 2001

1. New permanent exhibition: "1,000 Years of Milling in Dover"

a visitor operated sound commentary on each floor
re-design current interpretation throughout the Mill
meet the needs of schoolchildren and the changed National Curriculum
improve interpretation for disabled and partially sighted visitors

Total cost: £4,990
Volunteers will contribute much of the research and specialist design work
installation of sound trail system will be by students and New Deal trainees.

2. Upgrade Lighting for visitors:

enhance atmosphere inside historic mill
improve facilities for displaying work of local artists
create better area for performances in Mill Cafe
improve accessibility for disabled amd partially-sighted visitors
reduce running costs and benefit environment by installing low energy bulb fittings

Total cost: £4,635
Skilled volunteers will install the wiring; specialist cable and fittings will be donated.

3. Refurbish waterwheel

Aim to revive the Mill's welcoming face to visitors
Repoint brickwork above waterwheel arch
clean off algae and scale
Repair/ repoint brickwork
Paint waterwheel arch and waterwheel

Total cost: £1,850
Volunteers will undertake all the labour on these tasks.

4. Repaint planking of mill tower

erection of scaffolding around the mill tower for safe working (provided at substantial discount to the charity by a local firm)
cleaning of dirty planking by pressure hose, without polluting the river with caustic chemicals
replace rotten sash windows like-with-like as specified by conservation officer
repaint planking with mould-resistant paint designed to last for at least 5 years
consultant architect: Roger Lewis of Dudley Marsh Ltd Dover.

Total cost: £10,100
Volunteers will be trained to work up the scaffolding, cleaning and painting.
